iPad getting too hot? Here's what causes it, how to cool it down safely, and when overheating means something more serious.
A customer came in last summer panicked. Her iPad had shown a temperature warning screen and shut itself down. "I was just using it on the patio," she said. That was the problem - direct sunlight plus a thick leather case. We let it cool for 20 minutes and it was fine. No repair needed.
iPads generate heat. That's normal - processors doing work creates warmth. But there's a difference between "warm during a game" and "too hot to hold comfortably." Here's how to tell the difference, how to cool it down safely, and when overheating signals a real problem.
Warning
Never put a hot iPad in a fridge or freezer. Rapid temperature changes can cause condensation inside the device, leading to water damage. Let it cool gradually at room temperature instead.
Apple says iPads are designed to operate between 0°C and 35°C. Getting warm during use is completely normal - it means the processor is working. Here's how to tell normal warmth from problematic overheating:
| Normal (Warm) | Problem (Overheating) | |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Noticeably warm but comfortable | Too hot to hold comfortably |
| When it happens | During games, video, GPS | During light use or idle |
| Duration | Cools when task ends | Stays hot even after stopping |
| Performance | Normal operation | Dims, slows, or shuts down |
| Location | Centre/back of device | Concentrated in one spot |
If your iPad gets warm during Procreate, gaming, or video calls - that's normal. If it overheats just checking email, or won't cool down after you stop using it, something else is going on.
Based on what we see in the shop, here are the most common causes:
If your iPad is overheating, work through these steps:
Get out of direct sunlight. Move away from heat sources. If you're outside, find shade. If you're in a hot car, bring it inside to air conditioning.
This is important. Cases - especially thick, padded, or leather ones - trap heat against the device. The iPad's aluminium back is designed to dissipate heat. Let it breathe.
Swipe up from the bottom (or double-tap Home button) to see open apps. Swipe up on each to close them all. Then go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off temporarily.
If it's plugged in, disconnect it. Charging generates heat. Let it cool before resuming charging.
Swipe down from the top-right corner and drag the brightness slider down. High brightness means more power consumption and heat.
Put the iPad down and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Don't put it on a soft surface like a bed or sofa - a hard, cool surface like a table is better for heat dissipation.
Did You Know?
Cooling time: Most iPads cool to normal temperature within 10-20 minutes when moved to a cool spot with the case removed. If it's still hot after 30 minutes of rest, there may be a hardware issue.
If your iPad gets too hot, iOS will display a temperature warning screen and the iPad will become unusable until it cools down. This is a protection feature, not a malfunction.
If you see the temperature warning, don't panic. Move the iPad to a cooler location, remove the case, and wait. Most iPads will return to normal within 15-30 minutes.
Even with a temperature warning displayed, you can still make emergency calls if needed. iOS prioritises this function regardless of temperature state.
Normal overheating from environmental causes or intensive use is self-limiting - the iPad protects itself and recovers once cooled. But these signs suggest a hardware problem:
Warning
If you see screen lifting or case separation: This indicates a swollen battery, which is a safety concern. Stop using the iPad immediately and bring it in for inspection. Swollen batteries can be dangerous.
