If your battery is swelling: This is a safety issue. Stop using the MacBook immediately and don't charge it. Swollen batteries can rupture, leak chemicals, or in rare cases catch fire. Get it replaced as soon as possible.

Understanding Cycle Counts

A "cycle" is using 100% of your battery's capacity (not necessarily in one go). Using 50% today and 50% tomorrow equals one cycle. Apple rates most MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles before capacity drops below 80%.

2. Click System Information
3. Under Hardware, click Power
4. Look for Cycle Count under Battery Information

Battery swelling is more common than people realize, and it's the one battery symptom you shouldn't ignore:

• Trackpad issues: The trackpad stops clicking properly or feels raised - the swelling battery underneath pushes it up
• Case separation: Gaps appearing between the bottom case and the main body
• Keyboard problems: Keys feel different or the keyboard appears to bow slightly
• Visible bulging: The bottom of the MacBook doesn't sit flat anymore

Apple's Approach

• Top case replacement: Apple typically replaces the entire top case (battery + keyboard + trackpad + palm rest) rather than just the battery
• Genuine parts: Guaranteed Apple components
• Appointment required: Often 1-2 weeks wait for a Genius Bar slot
• Turnaround: Usually 3-5 business days once they have it
• Data: Apple may wipe your Mac during service

Independent Repair (celltech)

• Battery-only replacement: We replace just the battery, keeping your existing keyboard and trackpad
• Quality parts: OEM-equivalent batteries with same capacity specs
• No appointment needed: Walk in or send via mail
• Turnaround: Same day for most models
• Data: We don't touch your data at all

When to choose Apple: If your MacBook is under AppleCare+ or you need proof of genuine Apple service for resale. Otherwise, independent repair is typically faster, equally reliable, and keeps your existing components intact.

What Happens During Replacement

MacBook battery replacement at celltech follows this process:

1. Diagnosis: We confirm the battery is the issue (sometimes it's the charging circuit on the logic board)
2. Adhesive removal: Modern MacBook batteries are glued in place - we use safe solvents to release the adhesive without damaging internals
3. Battery removal: Careful extraction of the old battery
4. Cleaning: Remove old adhesive residue from the case
5. New battery installation: Position and secure the replacement battery
6. Calibration: Full charge/discharge cycle to calibrate the battery meter
7. Testing: Verify battery health reads 100%, charging works correctly, and trackpad/keyboard function normally

Battery Quality: OEM vs Aftermarket

Not all replacement batteries are equal. Here's what matters:

• Capacity: Should match or exceed original battery (measured in mAh or Wh)
• Cell quality: Good batteries use quality lithium-polymer cells from reputable manufacturers
• Safety certification: Proper batteries have safety circuits to prevent overcharging and overheating
• Warranty: A confident supplier offers a proper warranty

We use OEM-equivalent batteries - same specifications as Apple originals, from certified manufacturers. They're not Apple-branded, but they perform identically and include full safety circuitry.

Beware cheap batteries: Ultra-cheap replacement batteries often have inflated capacity claims, poor quality cells, and inadequate safety circuits. A £50 eBay battery might work initially but fail quickly or, worse, swell or overheat. With lithium batteries, you get what you pay for.
