MacBook Keyboard Repair: Your Options Explained

If you have a MacBook from 2016-2019, you probably already know about the keyboard problem. Apple's butterfly mechanism was notoriously unreliable – a single speck of dust could disable a key. We've repaired countless butterfly keyboards since the design was introduced, and the issues are well-documented across the industry.
But keyboard issues aren't limited to the butterfly era. Liquid damage, worn keys, and simple wear affect all MacBooks eventually. Here's what you need to know about MacBook keyboard repair.

Understanding MacBook keyboard mechanisms: Butterfly (2016-2019) vs Scissor (Magic Keyboard)
Identifying Your Keyboard Problem
Single Key Not Working
Usually debris under the key or a failed key mechanism. Often fixable without replacing the entire keyboard.
Multiple Keys Failing
Could be debris, could be liquid damage, could be a failing keyboard connection. Needs diagnosis to determine the best fix.
Sticky or Mushy Keys
Almost always liquid damage - even from a small spill months ago. Sugar from drinks is particularly problematic.
Double-Typing or Ghost Keys
The keyboard is registering presses incorrectly. This is usually the butterfly mechanism failing on affected models, or a keyboard connection issue on others.
Entire Keyboard Unresponsive
Either a connection issue (fixable) or a more serious logic board problem (more complex). We'd need to diagnose which.
Quick test: Connect an external USB keyboard. If that works fine, the problem is definitely your MacBook's keyboard. If it doesn't, there might be a software or logic board issue.
The Butterfly Keyboard Era
Apple used butterfly mechanism keyboards in these models:
- MacBook 12" (2015-2017)
- MacBook Pro 13" & 15" (2016-2019)
- MacBook Air (2018-2019)
The butterfly mechanism was thinner than the traditional scissor mechanism, but far less reliable. Dust, debris, and general use could cause keys to stop working or double-type.
The Apple Keyboard Service Program
Apple acknowledged the problem and offered free repairs for affected models until 2023. Unfortunately, that program has now ended. If your butterfly keyboard is failing and Apple won't cover it, we can help at a fraction of Apple's out-of-warranty cost.
Modern MacBooks
MacBook Air 2020+ and MacBook Pro 2020+ returned to scissor mechanism keyboards. These are much more reliable and suffer fewer issues. When they do fail, repairs are more straightforward.
Repair Costs by MacBook Model
| MacBook Model | Repair Type | Our Price |
|---|---|---|
| Any MacBook | Individual key repair/cleaning | £49-99 |
| Butterfly models (2016-2019) | Keyboard replacement | £249-349 |
| MacBook Air M1/M2/M3 | Keyboard replacement | £229-279 |
| MacBook Pro M1/M2/M3 | Keyboard replacement | £279-399 |
| Older MacBooks (2015 & earlier) | Keyboard replacement | £199-279 |
Apple's keyboard repairs often involve replacing the entire top case (keyboard + battery + trackpad). We can usually replace just the keyboard, which is significantly cheaper. If your battery also needs attention, see our MacBook battery replacement guide .
What Happens During Keyboard Repair
For Individual Key Issues
- Remove the affected key cap
- Clean the mechanism and area underneath
- Replace the mechanism if damaged
- Reattach and test
Time: 30-60 minutes for most cases.
For Full Keyboard Replacement
- Remove the bottom case
- Disconnect and remove the battery (for safety)
- Remove the old keyboard assembly
- Install new keyboard
- Reconnect battery and reassemble
- Test all keys and functions
Time: 2-4 hours depending on model.
Data safety: Keyboard repair doesn't touch your storage at all. Your files, applications, and settings remain exactly where they are. Even full keyboard replacement doesn't affect data.
Preventing Future Problems
- Keep drinks away - Liquid damage is the main keyboard killer
- Use a keyboard cover - Especially for butterfly models (though it can trap heat)
- Clean regularly - Compressed air can prevent debris buildup
- Don't eat over your MacBook - Crumbs are almost as bad as liquid
