If you have a MacBook from 2016-2019, you probably already know about the keyboard problem. Apple's butterfly mechanism was notoriously unreliable – a single speck of dust could disable a key. We've repaired countless butterfly keyboards since the design was introduced, and the issues are well-documented across the industry.
But keyboard issues aren't limited to the butterfly era. Liquid damage, worn keys, and simple wear affect all MacBooks eventually. Here's what you need to know about MacBook keyboard repair.

Data from celltech repair logs, January-December 2025

Usually debris under the key or a failed key mechanism. Often fixable without replacing the entire keyboard.
Could be debris, could be liquid damage, could be a failing keyboard connection. Needs diagnosis to determine the best fix.
Almost always liquid damage - even from a small spill months ago. Sugar from drinks is particularly problematic.
The keyboard is registering presses incorrectly. This is usually the butterfly mechanism failing on affected models, or a keyboard connection issue on others.
Either a connection issue (fixable) or a more serious logic board problem (more complex). We'd need to diagnose which.
Pro Tip
Quick test: Connect an external USB keyboard. If that works fine, the problem is definitely your MacBook's keyboard. If it doesn't, there might be a software or logic board issue.
Apple used butterfly mechanism keyboards in these models:
The butterfly mechanism was thinner than the traditional scissor mechanism, but far less reliable. Dust, debris, and general use could cause keys to stop working or double-type.
Apple acknowledged the problem and offered free repairs for affected models until 2023. Unfortunately, that program has now ended. If your butterfly keyboard is failing and Apple won't cover it, we can help at a fraction of Apple's out-of-warranty cost.
MacBook Air 2020+ and MacBook Pro 2020+ returned to scissor mechanism keyboards. These are much more reliable and suffer fewer issues. When they do fail, repairs are more straightforward.
