Cracked or dead MacBook display? Here's what repairs cost, when they make sense, and what Apple won't tell you.
Her PhD thesis was on that MacBook. Three years of work, field research from Botswana, irreplaceable interviews. The screen had a crack running from corner to corner after a bag mishap at the airport.
"Apple quoted me £600 and said it'd take two weeks," she said. "I have my viva in ten days."
We had her MacBook Pro back to her in 48 hours. The screen was perfect, the data completely untouched, and she paid half what Apple quoted. She passed her viva.
MacBook screen repairs are different from phone repairs. Higher stakes, more complex technology, and usually people who need their machine back. We've repaired 180+ MacBook screens in the past year - students, freelancers, businesses. Here's what you need to know.

MacBook screens aren't just screens - they're complete lid assemblies containing the display, webcam, ambient light sensors, antenna cables, and the hinge mechanism. Apple designed them as integrated units, which makes repair more complex than simply swapping a panel.

Apple's Retina displays have the LCD panel permanently bonded to the front glass. This creates a single, thin unit with excellent optical quality - but it also means glass damage typically requires replacing the entire display assembly.
Technically, some specialists can separate the glass from the LCD and replace just the outer layer. However, this is extremely difficult, has lower success rates, and often results in dust particles trapped under the glass. For most users, complete display assembly replacement is the right choice.
We'll always give you honest advice. A £450 screen repair on a 2015 MacBook Pro that works perfectly? Often makes sense. The same repair on a machine with other failing components? We'd tell you to save your money.
This is the question we get most often: "Will you need my password?" "Will my files be okay?"
The answer is no and yes.
