Warning
The most important thing: Don't turn it on. Don't plug it in. Don't charge it. Every time power flows through wet circuits, you're causing more damage.
What you do right now matters more than anything else. Follow these steps in order:
That's it for immediate action. Now comes the hard part: don't do anything else.
These "tips" are everywhere online. They're all wrong:
Rice doesn't absorb moisture from inside electronics. It just makes you feel like you're doing something. Worse, rice dust can get into ports and speakers, causing additional problems.
Heat pushes water deeper into the phone. It can also melt internal components. The heat that feels "warm" to your hand is dangerously hot for electronics.
"Let it dry for a week" sounds sensible, but corrosion starts within hours. By the time a week has passed, the water is gone but the damage is permanent.
This is the most common mistake. The phone might turn on—and then die permanently as electricity shorts across wet circuits. Resist the urge.
Understanding the enemy helps you fight it:
The water itself isn't the main problem—it's the corrosion that happens afterwards. That's why speed matters so much.
Honest answer: it depends on how quickly you act.
| Time to Professional Treatment | Success Rate | Typical Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Within 24 hours | 85%+ | Full recovery likely |
| 24-72 hours | 60-70% | Good chance, some component damage possible |
| 3-7 days | 40-50% | Recovery possible, significant repairs likely |
| 1 week+ | 20-30% | Corrosion widespread, data recovery priority |
What you dropped it in matters too. Fresh water is least damaging.Salt water corrodes faster. Coffee, beer, or soft drinks are worst—the sugars accelerate corrosion dramatically.
